Top 10 own goals of all time

Own goals: the bane of any defender’s existence, the joy of everyone else’s. When that ball is swung into the commentator’s corridor of uncertainty, you can’t blame a defender for sticking out a leg and burying the ball into the back of his own net…but yes you can.
Here are some various records for own goals, their infamous scorers and other riotous events that are worth reading about.

Own Goals: A Brief History, Including Records And Anecdotes

The highest total in a single Premier League season is four, that honor belonging to Liverpool’s Martin Skrtel during the 2013-14 campaign.
The highest career total in the Premier League is 10, a record held by Irishman Richard Dunne.
Jamie Carragher scored seven own goals throughout his 17-year career at Liverpool and managed only three for his own side.
If Shane Duffy is among these records, it's for having the worst week ever. In August of 2016, Duffy played two matches in the space of a week for Blackburn Rovers. In those two matches, Duffy managed to score three own goals and finish it off with a red card.
The most own goals scored in a single match by one individual was recorded by Stan van den Buys, who played his football for Germinal Beerschot in Belgium. His side lost 3-2 to Anderlecht, with Van den Buys scoring all three goals against his own team.
During the 1960-61 Serie A season, Inter Milan defeated Catania 5-0, with Catania scoring on themselves four times.
In 2017, there were scenes of delirium when Javier Mascherano scored his first official goal for Barcelona in 319 games. During that period, he’d managed to score six against his own side.
The record for most own goals scored in a single match dates back to 2002, in a match that also set the record for the most goals ever scored in single senior game. Madagascar’s Stade Olympique L’Emyrne scored on their own net 149 times in a 149-0 defeat to AS Adema.
Stade Olympique L'Emyrne continued to score on themselves in protest of a refereeing decision that had gone against them.

Top 10 own goals of all time

James Collins caused much mirth with his own goal for West Ham against Manchester City on Sunday, but where does his effort feature in the all time Top 10?

Top 10 own goals of all time
10) Tony Popovic
Crystal Palace v Portsmouth
Popovic was not a man known for flair and invention, but the Aussie hardman did release a more artistic bent when scoring an own goal for Palace against Portsmouth that took a leaf out of the Gianfranco Zola book of classy finishes. In a way.

9) James Collins
Manchester City v West Ham
Jesus Navas's cross looked pretty tame, but Collins met it with all the guile of a top-level striker - softly caressing the ball with his left foot over West Ham's keeper Adrian. A classic "he wouldn't be able to do that again if he tried 100 times".

8) Peter Enckelman
Aston Villa v Birmingham City
Second City derbies are a cauldron of animosity and contempt. A calm head is needed. And, Peter Enckleman found to his cost, some sure footedness, too. Had the goalkeeper failed to touch the ball the goal, coming straight from a throw in, wouldn't have counted. But he did, just enough.

7) Djimi Traoré
Liverpool v Burnley
"Don't blame it on Hamann, don't blame it on Biscan, don't blame it on Finnan – blame it on Traoré," went the terrace ditty after the bandy-legged defender and European Cup winner pulled this off in an FA Cup match against Burnley.

6) Chris Brass
Bury v Darlington
Chris Brass was the youngest manager in York City's history. Chris Brass was a hard working, honest professional who gave his all for a career of a decade and a half. But you don't care about all that do you? Chris Brass once did this – and a career was defined.

5) Festus Baise
Citizen AA v Sun Hei
Until this week no one had heard of Nigerian defender Festus Baise. And then in a match between Sun Hai and Citizen AA in the Hong Kong league he did this. The boy's clearly a bit special.

4) Wayne Hatswell
Forest Green v Morecambe
When a non-league team gets a slot on Match of the Day it is either because of a giant killing or a mirth inducing howler. Forest Green v Morecambe. There be no giants here ...
---
3) Unknown
FC Fehervar v Debrecen DVSC
Almost certainly the most watched Hungarian Cup match ever if YouTube hits are counted after a Fehervar defender undid his goalkeeper's fine efforts at a penalty late on. The reaction from his team-mates tell it all.
---
2) Jamie Pollock
Manchester City v QPR
Pollock's goal in this First Division relegation scrap helped send City down to the lower reaches of the football league, the match eventually ending 2-2 with Rangers surviving that season. Still, if something's worth doing, it's worth doing in style, eh?

1) Lee Dixon
Arsenal v Coventry
Back in the days when you were still allowed to pass back to a goalkeeper, that famous back four of Dixon's era never turned down an opportunity to do so. Just this once, however, the Arsenal left back really shouldn't have.
